SHOT Show 2015: Oakley Introduces Tombstone Eyewear for Range Shooting

L-Oakley-SI-Tombstone-sz

Oakley Standard Issue (SI), a division of Oakley, introduced the Oakley SI Tombstone eyeshield at the SHOT Show, where shooters attending the range day were able to try it out. Developed for the needs of competitive shooters, the eyeshield combines years of development with the Military and advanced optical engineering to solve the shortcomings of traditional shooting glasses. The Oakley SI Tombstone eyeshield provides a wider, unobstructed field of view, rapid lens exchange, and Oakley’s Prizm lens tint technology to help shooters increase contrasts between targets and surrounding environments.

The development of Tombstone started with identifying problems that professional shooters were having with their current eyewear. Oakley worked closely with several professional shooters and began by addressing the field of view challenges. The shooters stated limitations with traditional frame profiles and obstruction of view while acquiring a proper sight picture and poor peripheral vision.

Extensive research was conducted using a 60Hz eye tracking system designed by Sensomotoric Instruments Inc. (SMI). The eye tracker precisely gauges and records eye position and movement in real time scenarios and was developed with more than 100,000 test participants. The data captured allowed Oakley to see that the upper periphery of the lens is critical in providing the visual field shooters need for performance and safety. The Tombstone eyeshield maximizes the lens zone for an expanded field of view. Tombstone expands the zone to a full 120-degree view. It utilizes breakthroughs in Oakley frame design, as well as the patented technologies of High Definition Optics to ensure razor-sharp clarity at every angle of vision.

Another challenge with conventional shooting eyewear is swapping out lenses. Traditional eyewear lens exchange can leave lenses with smudges that compromise sighting. With Tombstone, a single release trigger allows users to quickly change the lens without ever touching the lens front. The new lens locks into place similar to inserting a magazine into a weapon.

Critical to the performance of Tombstone is the Oakley Prizm lens. Prizm technology strategically blocks specific wavelengths of light that interfere with vision while emphasizing the parts of the color spectrum where the eye is most sensitive to detail in specific environments. The end result is a perfectly tuned contrast that makes targets stand out against foliage, dirt and the sky.

2015 Outdoor Gear oh the Show – The North Face

gos-sia-or-final

Gear of the Show Scoured the Floors of Winter OR and SIA 2015 in search of the coolest gear for their coveted Gear of the Show awards. And these 2 products from The North Face are one of the top picks from Gear of the Show 2015.

The North Face Modulator ABS

north-face-modulator-abs_s

Inflatable avalanche airbag packs, designed to keep the wearer on top of the snow if he gets caught in a slide, are becoming a mandatory part of the backcountry quiver. While they work great, the airbags are also permanently built into the pack: if you want a small avy pack for short excursions and a larger one for longer trips, you have to buy two different packs. Enter the North Face’s Modulator, the first-ever avalanche airbag system that converts any backpack into a potentially lifesaving ABS avy airbag pack.

Read more about the Modulator ABS.

The North Face Ultra Lite WP Jacket

A short-sleeved waterproof-breathable jacket? Seriously? Yes, seriously. Some of our staff were a bit dubious about the real-world functionality of the Ultra Lite, but anyone who has run long distances in cold rain knows that doing so in even the most breathable hard shell can often suck: you steam up the inside quickly and your sweat tends to pool in the crook of the arms and elbows.

Bushido from La Sportiva is one of the Best trail Running Shoes in Spring Gear Guide 2015!

LaSportivaBushido

The La Sportiva Bushido is a solid general purpose trail shoe that should appeal to performance-oriented mountain runners. It feels most at home on technical terrain and hills—think canyon crossings with twisty descents and steep rocky climbs, loose off-trail sections, and long ascents that involve a mix of running and power hiking. That’s where its stiffness is a real asset; on mellower paths it feels like overkill. Mind the fit: It runs half a size small.

Suunto announces new Ambit3 Run, colored HR straps, workout creator and more

Suunto announces new Ambit3 Run, colored HR straps, workout creator and more

Ambit3Run-Lime

Suunto has announced their latest watch onto the market, the Ambit3 Run.  This watch follows in the footsteps of the Ambit2/2S/2R variants whereby Suunto takes an existing watch and then produces a variant of it specifically focused on the running segment (by removing non-running features).

In the case of the Ambit3 Run, they’ve pared back much of the multisport focus of the Ambit 3 Peak & Sport, but kept the running areas.  Additionally, like last year when they announced the Ambit2 R, they’ve taken the opportunity to announce new functionality that will be ushered in with the Ambit3 Run, but is coming to all Ambit3 units via a free firmware update.  I’ll briefly dive into those updates in a later section.

Trinidad James on CNN. Stand up for your rights. It’s called a freedom of speech.

Thank you for coming to place where you worked and decided to come and buy a Vintage Carrera Boeing 5701 41 sunglasses.  It’s looking good.

Vintage Carrera Boeing Collection 5701 41 sunglasses were produced in only small quantities, a 1980s collaboration between Carrera and Boeing to design and produce high performance eyewear for pilots as well as the fashion conscious public. The closed in, gold plated nose bridge of the Carrera 5701 is a distinctive design feature and indicates early production, and the silver plated front frame and gold plated ear stems look great with the blue gradient optical grade 1, lightweight, highly scratch resistant UV protected lenses. Other notable design features include 3-C nosepads with 70° rotating capability and height adjustable, shock absorbers that provide flexibility, stability and comfort, and temple screws which never require adjusting. The unisex Carrera Boeing Collection frame measures approximately 5.5″ temple to temple, and the lenses measure approximately 2.375″ x 2.25″ at the widest points with left lens laser etched Boeing. You’ll find the Boeing Carrera logo impressed on the exterior of both ear stems, and the inside of one stem is marked The Boeing Collection by Carrera while the inside of the other stem is marked Made in Austria 5701 41 62 [] 12 Small 125 and impressed with the unique serial number.

3-16-15 – ( CNN ) – Rapper Trinidad James appeared on CNN tonight for a lengthy discussion over the n-word that culminated in James clashing with conservative guest Ben Ferguson over the use of the n-word and whether rap artists are profiting off it. James first spoke with Don Lemon and said he’s not terribly concerned with the SAE frat mother who dropped the n-word several times while singing along to one of his songs.

But the real fireworks began when Ferguson and Marc Lamont Hill joined in the second segment. Hill backed up James to say that rap artists get undue “burden and pressure” to stop saying the n-word when filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino don’t get the same treatment.

Ferguson confronted James about the “divisive” nature of the word and said rappers are “afraid that they’ll lose out on money and sales” if the n-word goes away. He even told James, “You’re making money off it!” James shot back that he’s giving the n-word too much power, arguing that he gets money from his music and creativity and not the n-word alone.

Ferguson even told James that the n-word is the only reason he’s on the show. Hill piped up that he’s actually on the show because a white woman used the n-word first, and also that “white people were saying the word nigger before Trinidad James was born.”

ArmourLite Previewing New Navigator Diver Series and Officer Field Series Watches at JCK Las Vegas 2014

ArmourLite Navigator Diver Series watch

ArmourLite Navigator Diver Series watch

Whether your passion is scuba diving, hiking, mountain climbing, surfing, or just about any “awesome” adventure, ArmourLite has a watch for you. ArmourLite is excited to preview two new highly anticipated watch series at JCK Las Vegas 2014: the ArmourLite Navigator Diver Series and the ArmourLite Officer Field Series.

The all-new ArmourLite Navigator Diver Series watches were designed to satisfy the tastes of adventurers around the world. “We consulted with a lot of hardcore adventure seekers and this new series incorporates all the design elements that were highly demanded by these individuals,” explains Ashley Diener, CEO of ArmourLite. Navigating the land and seas just got a whole lot easier!

The Navigator Diver Series watches are the first tritium illuminated watches to offer a screw crown with a polycarbonate case. Traditional polycarbonate case construction makes it difficult to incorporate a screw crown. Rather, push crowns are commonly used. In addition to the ultra-lightweight polycarbonate construction, anti-reflective scratch resistant sapphire crystal is used. Swiss Ronda 507 quartz movements with day and date displays power the watches. A unidirectional rotating bezel with a green tritium marker at the zero-position is useful for keeping track of elapsed time. Plus, the watches offer 200m of dive-friendly water resistance. The dials feature green and orange tritium markers as well as compass bearings. Each watch also comes with an NBR (nitrile butadiene rubber) band that is heavily resistant to oils, greases, and extreme temperatures.

The first model in the ArmourLite Navigator Diver Series, AL1001, will be available for sale later this year. ArmourLite authorized retailers will begin taking pre-orders immediately following JCK Las Vegas.

The ArmourLite Navigator Diver Series watches offer the following features:

  • Green, orange, yellow T25 tritium markers on the dial
  • Compass bearings on the dial
  • Ultra lightweight polycarbonate case construction
  • Swiss Ronda 507 quartz movement with day and date displays
  • Anti-reflective scratch resistant sapphire crystal
  • 200m water resistance rated for diving
  • Unidirectional elapsed-time bezel with a green tritium marker
  • 44mm diameter case
  • Highly durable NBR (nitrile butadiene rubber) band
  • MSRP: $325.00

Suunto Ambit 3 is coming.

ambit3_1

Suunto has announced their latest endurance and multisport watch, the Suunto Ambit3.  The watch incrementally builds on previous generations of the Ambit in what has been a roughly 12-16 month release cycle for the company.  The Ambit3 when it’s available in September 2014 will add mobile phone integration such as workout uploading and smartphone notifications, while also including support for Bluetooth Smart sensors and heart rate while swimming.

I’ve been using a few beta units of the Ambit3 for a fair bit of time now and thus have a good understanding of many of the new areas.  But because the watch and the mobile app experience are still very much beta (almost two months until public availability), please do understand this isn’t a review.  It’s more of a ‘preview of new things’ coming.  As such, things could change.  They could get better, or, they could get worse – that’s the nature of beta.  Historically speaking however Suunto actually is one of the stronger companies when it comes to releasing relatively bug-free software.  Further, they have a nearly perfect record for releasing products and firmware updates on time per the dates they’ve set (unlike most all of their competitors).  Thus, I remain optimistic on their ability to execute here.

With that said, let’s dive into what’s new and notable.  In my final In-Depth Review (which would be in early September), I’ll cover all the regular stuff that’s not new.  But as a general rule of thumb everything from the Ambit2 is available in the Ambit3 (unless noted below).
